Anthony Volpe gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead in the second inning, but the offense went quiet after that, and the Rays scored six unanswered runs to even the series at a game apiece.
Nestor Cortes allowed four runs in 5.1 innings as his road ERA this season skyrocketed to 6.75. Dennis Santana gave up three runs in relief of Cortes.
The Yankees will try to bounce back and take two of three from the Rays on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. with Luis Gil on the mound.
