A former coal plant in Yates County now powers the Greenidge Generation cryptocurrency operation—and it’s drawing scrutiny from state regulators, according to the Democrat and Chronicle. The site uses on-site natural gas, producing emissions and recently spilling oil into Seneca Lake.
Greenidge is one of 11 crypto mining operations examined in a new draft environmental report from the DEC. At 112.5 megawatts, it’s one of the state’s largest and located in a designated disadvantaged community, raising concerns over pollution and climate impact.
Nearby residents and business owners voiced frustration during a recent public hearing, citing environmental harm and risks to tourism. Written public comments on the DEC report will be accepted through September 25.
