Community mourns loss of Officer Jensen, Deputy Hoosock after Syracuse-area shootout

More is being learned about the two law enforcement officers were tragically killed in a gunfire exchange on Sunday night in Salina. The fallen heroes have been identified as Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen, 29, from Rome, New York, and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hoosock, 37, from Clay, New York.


Officer Jensen, who had been with the Syracuse Police since graduating from the academy in 2022, was noted for his commitment and had recently been honored as Officer of the Month in December 2023. He served diligently in the Patrol Division of the Third Platoon, leaving behind his parents and a sister. Deputy Hoosock, a seasoned member of the Sheriff’s Office since 2007, had a distinguished career that included roles such as Watch Commander and Bomb Squad Commander. Awarded the Medal of Valor in 2020, Hoosock is survived by his wife and three children.

The community and their departments are in mourning as they remember the dedication and bravery of these two officers, whose lives were devoted to public service and safety.
