Biden Admin announces new gun sale regs to close ‘gun show loophole’

The Biden administration announced new federal regulations on Thursday, mandating more firearm dealers, including those at gun shows and online platforms, to obtain federal licenses and conduct background checks in an effort to improve gun control. This move aims to close the so-called “gun show loophole,” addressing a long-standing gap in firearm sales oversight.

Under the new rule, any dealer who would require a license if operating from a physical store must now secure one, regardless of their sales location. This requirement is part of a broader effort to curb the unregulated sale of firearms, particularly by unlicensed dealers, a practice linked to numerous gun-related crimes.

The Department of Justice estimates there are over 20,000 unlicensed gun dealers in the U.S., a stark contrast to the 80,000 licensed ones. This regulatory change is expected to enhance public safety by reducing the number of firearms sold without background checks, amidst ongoing national debates over gun control.
