Massive fire at former Bath ladder factory still under investigation

  • Staff Report

A significant blaze that engulfed a manufacturing building on Delaware Avenue in Bath, formerly known as the Babcock Ladder Factory, is currently under investigation. The fire, which broke out Monday night, required the response of nearly a dozen fire departments from Steuben County. According to Tim Marshall, Steuben County’s Director of Public Safety, the scale of the fire will complicate efforts to determine its cause, with the Steuben County Fire Investigation Team leading the probe.

The fire, reported around 9 p.m., drew attention and slowed traffic on I-86 due to the large flames. Although the fire was declared under control by 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, firefighting units remained on site into the early morning to address residual flames. The property, now owned by Clark’s Specialty Company, saw significant damage, particularly to its middle section, though not all buildings were affected.

Clark’s Specialty Company, known for its comprehensive manufacturing services including fabrication and assembly for various materials, faces operational setbacks. While the full extent of the damage and the future functionality of the remaining structures are yet to be determined, officials express hope for partial recovery. The company, established in 1956, has a history rooted in the tool and die business, originally founded by former Mercury Aircraft employees.
