Ontario County to launch virtual history museum with augmented reality

Ontario County, in partnership with the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection and the Rochester firm STQRY, is set to revolutionize the way its historical narratives are experienced by creating a virtual museum.

This innovative project, designed to animate the county’s rich history through augmented reality, was announced following STQRY’s selection from seven competing proposals.

By enhancing traditional blue-and-yellow historical markers with voice and visual storytelling, this initiative aims to deepen the public’s engagement with Ontario County’s past.

The chosen firm, STQRY, impressed the Visitors Connection with its comprehensive approach to connecting the county’s historical sites into a cohesive “trail.”

Leveraging the creative and technical prowess of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) students, the project promises a dynamic blend of application flexibility and immersive content.

The collaboration between STQRY, RIT Magic Studios, and the Visitors Connection is poised to embark on content curation, laying the groundwork for the virtual museum’s success.

With a targeted completion date of December 31, 2024, and pending state environmental and historical approvals, the virtual museum project is set to enrich public understanding of Ontario County’s heritage.
