GoFundMe underway after Bassett family farm devastated by fire in Genoa

  • Staff Report

A devastating fire swept through a dairy farm in Genoa on Wednesday night, resulting in the tragic loss of several cows and the complete destruction of a barn. The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department responded to the emergency at the Bassett family’s farm located at 3074 Blakley Road around 7:27 p.m. Despite the efforts of multiple fire departments, the barn was deemed a total loss, though thankfully, no human injuries were reported.

The fire was largely contained by 10 p.m., thanks to the collaborative effort of fire departments from Aurora, King Ferry, Lansing, Locke, Long Hill, Moravia, Poplar Ridge, Scipio, Sempronius, and Union Springs. Support also came from Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, the Cayuga County Emergency Management Office, Cayuga County 911, and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Cayuga County fire investigators.

In the wake of the tragedy, the community has come together to support the Bassett family, whose barn has been a cornerstone of their family business for years. A GoFundMe campaign was quickly established to aid in the recovery, setting a goal of $50,000. As of noon Friday, generous donors have already contributed over $17,000 towards helping the family rebuild. Those wishing to support can visit the fundraising page at https://gofund.me/0356ab5d.
