Heat lamp caused fire in Benton, investigators say

Yates County firefighters quickly responded to a house fire in Potter on Wednesday, after reports of smoke in the basement of a one-story home at 1251 East Swamp Road around 8:40 a.m.

Firefighters from Penn Yan and Benton provided additional manpower, while Branchport-Keuka Park units supplied water.

Thankfully, the fire, which was extinguished shortly after 9 a.m., allowed for the safe evacuation of all occupants.

The fire was localized to the basement’s southeast corner, with the Yates County Fire Investigation Team identifying a toppled heating lamp as the cause.

This incident resulted in no injuries, underscoring the effectiveness of the response teams’ quick action.
