Enfield Community Center overcomes foreclosure risk after clerical error

In a dramatic turn of events, the Enfield Community Center faced foreclosure due to a significant clerical oversight that led to a $27,000 tax lien. The entire ordeal was first reported by The Ithaca Voice this week.

The center, which has been a cornerstone for local families, offering a variety of programs from karate classes to a small library, was at risk after a mishap resulted in the loss of its tax-exempt status. The error occurred during the pandemic when the non-profit organization purchased a building for the first time in its five-decade history, aiming to provide a stable location for its services.

The Enfield Community Council (ECC), responsible for the center, scrambled to rectify the situation. The issue stemmed from a miscommunication during the property’s purchase in 2021, causing the tax exemption renewal to be overlooked. Despite nearly two years of effort to resolve the issue with local and county officials, the community was forced to deplete its reserves to cover the unexpected expense, jeopardizing funds for critical maintenance like roof repairs.
