Corning Inc. to cut 107 jobs in Finger Lakes region

Corning Incorporated has announced it will lay off approximately 20% of its workforce at its manufacturing plant in Erwin, attributing the decision to economic reasons. The layoff, detailed in a WARN Notice filed with the New York State Department of Labor, will affect 107 employees at the company’s facility on Addison Road in Painted Post. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on May 19, 2024, impacting a plant that currently employs 532 workers.

The company informed its employees through a letter, stating that the layoffs are due to the closure of one of the production lines at the Erwin plant. This move is part of broader cost-cutting measures by Corning Inc., which last month announced a global reduction of approximately 1,000 jobs, approximately 2% of its worldwide workforce. This global reduction included about 200 employees from various local facilities.

The recent layoffs at the Erwin plant underscore the challenges faced by Corning Inc. as it navigates economic pressures. The company’s decision reflects broader trends in the manufacturing sector, where companies are continually adapting to market demands and economic fluctuations.
