Newark, Lyons communities remember former police chief Dick Bogan

The communities of Newark and Lyons are mourning the loss of former Police Chief Richard “Dick” Bogan, who passed away at 71 on December 31, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born in Utica on April 24, 1952, to Michael and Hannah (McCarthy) Bogan, Dick Bogan was a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Pal-Mac High School in 1970 and later attended Finger Lakes Community College. Bogan began his career as an apprentice electrician at Eastman Kodak.

Bogan’s law enforcement career started in 1976 with the Newark Police Department, inspired by his uncle, a transit police officer in New York City. He dedicated over three decades to the department, retiring as Police Chief in 2008. His commitment to public service continued as he became the Chief of Police in Lyons, serving until 2016.

In addition to his police duties, Bogan was also a code enforcement officer for Lyons and managed his own electrical contracting business.

His passing leaves a legacy of dedication and service in the Newark and Lyons communities, where he is remembered for his significant contributions to local law enforcement and public safety. Dick Bogan’s life and career exemplify a deep commitment to the communities he served, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him and worked alongside him.
