A tragic three-vehicle accident occurred on State Route 14 near Dundee-Glenora Road in Yates County, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
The incident, which happened just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, involved a chain-reaction crash instigated by a rear-end collision.
According to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, 65-year-old James Schroeder from Jermyn, Pennsylvania, struck the rear of a vehicle driven by 80-year-old Dennis Pabis of Throop, Pennsylvania. The impact forced Pabis’s car into the opposite lane, where it collided with a car driven by 78-year-old Phillip Crooks of Lakemont.
The Dundee Fire Department had to extricate Crooks from his vehicle. He and his passenger, Pamela Beers, also of Lakemont, were transported to Schuyler Hospital with minor injuries.
Tragically, Pabis succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Schroeder, evaluated at the scene, refused further medical attention. The accident prompted the closure of the affected portion of Route 14 for approximately two and a half hours.
The Yates County Accident Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the crash, with charges pending. Responding agencies included Dundee Fire and Ambulance, Yates EMS, Schuyler EMS, Yates County Office of Emergency Services, New York State Police, and the New York State DEC.
