In a recent court ruling, Edwin Garcia, a 66-year-old man from Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison following his guilty plea to first-degree rape.
Garcia admitted to the crime, which involved engaging in sexual intercourse with a person under eleven years old on May 20, 2023, in the Town of Ulysses.
His arrest by the New York State Police occurred the following day, leading to his continued incarceration since then. The sentencing, handed down by Tompkins County Judge Scott Miller, also includes 20 years of post-release supervision and mandates Garcia to register as a sex offender.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, in a statement, emphasized that this sentence serves as a stern warning against the sexual abuse of children, stating it will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in the community.
He acknowledged that while the judicial process cannot fully compensate for the trauma experienced by the victim and her family, the sentence represents the most severe legal consequences available for such a grave offense.
