After several hours of deliberation, a Wayne County jury has found Michael Robinson, a 48-year-old man from Newark, guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, comes after a trial that began on November 27 under the prosecutorial leadership of District Attorney Mike Calarco.
Mathis, who was 52 years old at the time of his death, was discovered by sheriff’s deputies in an apartment at the motel following a welfare check.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving sheriff’s detectives, state police, Newark police, the county district attorney’s office, and the Monroe County sheriff’s office.
It was noted that Robinson and Mathis were acquainted, though the nature of their relationship was not fully disclosed.
Sentencing will take place in February.
