Penn Yan police officer injured when man resists arrest while being transported to jail

Jurrell Thompson, a 32-year-old resident of Penn Yan, was recently arrested by local police on multiple charges, including obstruction, resisting arrest, and harassment following an incident in October.

Police say Thompson was already in custody for unrelated charges on October 27 when he engaged in a physical altercation with officers during his transport to Yates County Jail.

During the altercation, Thompson reportedly used the rear seat belt of the patrol car to wrap around his neck and resisted officers’ attempts to assist him.

The officers were ultimately compelled to cut the seat belt and subdue Thompson.

The incident escalated when Thompson, in the midst of the struggle, injured an officer’s hand. This occurred while the officer was holding onto the handcuff chain, which Thompson twisted, causing the injury.

Following this episode, Thompson was taken to Yates County Jail, where he was held until his arraignment.

He was ultimately arraigned on the charges exactly one month after the initial incident in Benton Town Court.
