The Hobart College rallied from a pair of deficits to force overtime in its Liberty League semifinal against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon. In OT, the Statesmen scored twice to topple the Engineers 4-2 and earn a trip to the conference championship game for the first time since 2019.
Tio-seeded Hobart improved to 11-5-2 this season with four different Statesmen hitting the back of the net. Fifth-seeded RPI got both of its goals from Josh Gaudiano and fell to 9-7-2.

  • RPI struck first Brady Van Epps set up Gaudiano’s first strike with a lead pass into the box. Gaudiano ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the net in the eighth minute.
  • Hobart countered less than four minutes into the second half. On a corner kick, junior Brendan Haggerty played a ball back toward the top of the box where junior Connor Koschineg volleyed it into the upper left corner.
  • In the 62nd minute, Gaudino netted his ninth goal of the season, firing home a shot from the right side, just outside the six.
  • Five minutes later, the Statesmen tied the match a second time. This time taking advantage of a foul near midfield. The free kick was driven into the 6-yard box where sophomore Brian Sheehan headed from the left side to the right. First-year La Zai Outerbridge headed back inside the six to graduate student Chris Friedlander who volleyed it into the right side of the goal for his fourth tally of the season.
  • After a scoreless 10-minute overtime period that saw neither team put a shot on frame, Madsen broke the stalemate in the 101st minute. Senior Jacob Siegel wove his way through traffic near the top of the box, before laying it off for junior Griffin Patterson, who fed Madsen on the right side. Madsen’s game winner threaded a narrow opening between the RPI goalie and a defender, ricocheting off the far post for his eighth goal of the season.
  • In the 109th minute, graduate student midfielder Nolan Fierro added an unassisted insurance goal that split the RPI defense much the same way that Madsen’s goal did.

  • Hobart senior goalie Guillermo Castañeda earned the win. He finished the match with eight saves, including six in the first half.
  • RPI goalie Colin Such made three saves, all in the first half.

  • Hobart will host the Liberty League Championship on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Statesmen will square off against third-seeded Ithaca. The Bombers played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer at second-seeded Union. Ithaca advanced with a 5-4 advantage in penalties.
  • Sunday’s championship is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
