Second-ranked Hobart scored three times in the second period and beat Elmira 4-1 Saturday to complete a sweep of its season-opening men's hockey series.
Adam Mendelson had a goal and an assist, and James Norton made 20 saves at the Murray Athletic Center. Hobart improved to 2-0, while Elmira fell to 0-2, according to HWS Athletics.
Two newcomers score their first college goals
Connor Elliott broke the scoreless tie at 4:51 of the second period, snapping a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle through traffic and past Elmira goalie Kirill Madiev. Christian Kocsis assisted on Elliott's first goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later, first-year Luke Calabria scored his first collegiate goal on a shot from the point. Mendelson and Nick Dimatos assisted.
First-year Frantisek Albrecht made it 3-0 with just over five minutes left in the second. He collected Adam Ondris' breakout pass, split two defenders and scored from the low slot for his first college goal.
Norton protects the lead
Jack Treacy ended Hobart's shutout bid just over eight minutes into the third period, one-timing Spencer Barrow's crossing pass past Norton. Justin Pare also assisted on Treacy's first goal of the season.
Mendelson restored the three-goal lead at 14:43, beating Madiev over the glove from the left faceoff circle. Easton Ryan assisted on Mendelson's first goal of the season.
Hobart outshot Elmira 44-21. Norton played the full game and stopped 20 shots, while Madiev made 40 saves over 60 minutes.
The Statesmen were 0-for-4 on the power play and killed Elmira's only opportunity. Hobart also held a 41-34 edge in faceoffs.
"I'm happy with the weekend but not satisfied. Frankly, this time of year I shouldn't be. But winning at home, then going to someone else's barn and winning is a good character sign, and the character signs are all I'm looking for this time of year. Solid weekend by my men," coach Mark Taylor said.
Hobart opens a home-and-home series with Utica at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
