Unexpected amounts of contaminated soil at a major construction site in Yates County have prompted the county’s Legislature to approve an additional $165,000 for its removal.
The Finger Lakes Times reports the added expenses emerged during the development of an estimated $26 million construction project in Benton Center, aimed at updating the county highway department site and introducing new spaces for emergency services and the county public health department.
Local officials said that while some unsuitable soil was expected based on preliminary tests, the actual amount exceeded initial projections.
The newly approved funds will cover the costs of transporting the contaminated soil to an appropriate disposal facility and managing the related contaminated water from excavation.
