Corning caregiver stole $20K from elderly man for out-of-state vacation

The Corning Police Department (PD) announced on August 23rd the arrest of a local woman in connection to the theft of $20,000 from an elderly man’s bank account.

Julie Sweeney, 48, of Corning, faces charges of first-degree identity theft and three counts of grand larceny. The arrest on August 16 led to her transfer to the Steuben County Jail, where she awaits arraignment.

The investigation commenced on July 20 when a complaint was registered with the Corning PD. Sweeney, believed to be in a position of trust to provide care and assistance to the elderly victim, allegedly misused this trust to make unauthorized transactions.

Investigators suggest the victim’s debit card was used by Sweeney for various expenses, including an out-of-state vacation.
