Death toll from Lahaina wildfire climbs to 106; victims still being identified by authorities

  • Staff Report

The aftermath of the catastrophic wildfire that ravaged the historic town of Lahaina continues to unfold, with the death toll now reaching 106.

Maui County authorities, with support from federal officials, have begun the grim task of identifying victims. A federally dispatched mobile morgue, equipped with coroners, pathologists, and technicians, arrived in Hawaii to aid in the identification process.

As recovery efforts persist, many residents grapple with unstable power and spotty cellphone coverage. Some have resorted to seeking stronger phone signals by the seawall, while others rely on a low-flying single-prop plane broadcasting crucial information regarding aid locations.

As of now, Maui County has publicly identified two victims and is in the process of notifying the families of three additional identified individuals before releasing their names.
