Wind project sparks backlash in Cayuga County towns

A public forum is set for August 6 in Auburn as opposition grows against a large-scale wind energy project in Cayuga County. According to The Citizen, Scipio and Venice officials say the Agricola Wind Project—featuring up to 24 turbines—threatens local control and raises environmental concerns.

Tensions center on the state’s streamlined permit process and a decommissioning plan that may leave parts of turbine foundations buried. Opponents argue this could damage farmland and hinder future use, while signs protesting the project line local roads.

Liberty Renewables says it’s committed to transparency and has hosted multiple meetings. The developer touts $63 million in local investment and a utility rebate program, but residents remain wary of long-term impacts.
