Oaks Corners and Clyde Fire Departments responded to a trailer fire on the New York State Thruway at approximately 10:12 a.m. on July 24.

The incident, initially reported as a trailer hauling empty cardboard boxes, was near mile marker 326 westbound and later determined to be in Seneca County.
On arrival, Chief Rey of the Oaks Corners Fire Department reported smoke emanating from a disconnected trailer.
Contrary to initial reports, firefighters discovered the trailer was filled with hundreds of sealed boxes containing packaged cigarettes.

Assistance in combating the blaze and handling the aftermath was provided by various units, including Clyde’s Engine 48 for water supply and North Seneca Ambulance for EMS and rehab support.
The cause of the fire, suspected to be a mechanical malfunction, remains under investigation. Control of the scene was later handed over to the New York State Police, the NYS Thruway Authority, and the towing company.
