NY gains $54.9M from billion-dollar Powerball run

The latest Powerball run, which culminated in a Californian winning the $1.08 billion jackpot on July 19, has proven to be a significant economic boost for New York, with more than $54.9 million in generated revenue for public schools and Lottery retailers. The sales from the 39-draw run, beginning on April 22, saw New York State Powerball ticket sales reaching $134 million. Out of the profits, $46.9 million is constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K-12 public schools while $8 million was paid as commissions to retailers across the state.

This third-largest Powerball jackpot ever is the latest in a line of substantial wins, the largest of which was a record jackpot of $2.040 billion won by another Californian in November 2022. New York’s biggest Powerball prize was a $343.8 million jackpot in 2018. According to New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer, the lottery continues to provide not just entertainment for New Yorkers but also significant revenue for public schools and small businesses.

In addition to the substantial revenue benefits, numerous New Yorkers won prizes during the Powerball run from April to July 19, including seven $1 million second prize winners and numerous Powerplay winners. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, the New York Lottery, the largest and most profitable in North America, contributed a whopping $3.685 billion in Lottery Aid to Education, further emphasizing its continued commitment to supporting education in the state.
