According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in New York State on Monday stands steady at $3.69, identical to last week’s prices. Nationwide, the average cost per gallon dropped marginally by a penny, from $3.58 to $3.57.
Various cities in the Western and Central New York area experienced slight fluctuations, with the biggest increase of 4 cents noted in Rome ($3.79), and the largest decrease of a penny seen in Buffalo ($3.67) and Elmira ($3.63).
Currently, lower oil prices, ranging between $68 and $73, are maintaining a steady rate at the gas pump. However, AAA reports that these figures might see a rise with the approach of the Independence Day holiday. An increased travel demand due to the festivities, reaching new records, will likely cause an increase in gasoline prices.
This year, AAA anticipates a 2.4% increase in people driving to their holiday destinations compared to 2022, totaling 43.2 million travelers. This figure also marks a 4% increase from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This surge in holiday travel is expected to exert upward pressure on gas prices in the coming week.
