Special meeting to discuss extra cost, problematic soil at Yates highway building site coming Friday

The Yates County Legislature will hold a special session this Friday to address an unexpected issue at the Highway, Office of Emergency Services, and Public Health facility construction site in Benton.

The county had contracted DiFiore Construction for site work which involved removing and replacing 3,000 cubic yards of unsuitable soils.

However, during the excavation process, additional areas requiring soil removal were discovered, necessitating further authorization for DiFiore to continue with the project.

County Administrator Nonie Flynn tells Finger Lakes News Radio that Friday’s meeting will discuss authorizing DiFiore to proceed on a time and material basis for the extra soil removal and replacement.

The additional costs, capped at $300,000, will be drawn from the project’s contingency line. The county had initially approved the project back in April, with Friday’s meeting set to address these unforeseen developments.
