WINTER WEATHER: 3-5 inches of snow, plus dangerously cold wind chill readings expected

The biggest weather storyline for most of the day today will be gusty winds and dangerously low wind chills. However, a few areas will see moderate lake effect snow, which will only make travel more difficult.

The National Weather Service has a few active alerts and advisories based on location. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • A Winter Weather Advisory is active until 4 a.m. Saturday for Monroe, Wayne, and Cayuga counties. Lake effect snow will make road conditions challenging, especially since road salt will have little impact. Snow accumulations of 3-5 inches is forecasted by the National Weather Service.
  • A Wind Chill Advisory remains active for wind chill readings that will remain between -15 and -20 degrees for most of the day. Air temperatures will hover around zero. This advisory exists for the entire region and expires during the mid-morning hours on Saturday.

Plan on snow covered and slippery road conditions. The NWS says areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
