Sterling Renaissance Festival hit with $5K fine for food safety violations: Pattern of issues observed over last three seasons

Bad news for the Sterling Renaissance Festival. Health officials in Cayuga County have fined organizers $5,000 for numerous food safety violations.

The Citizen reported Tuesday that health inspectors found numerous sanitary code violations over the summer.

Sterling will be required to pay $5,000 and agree to a compliance plan that has to be implemented before the festival reopens.

There were inspections in July and August, which revealed 11 critical hazards and 33 sanitation and maintenance violations.

Improper food temperatures and a lack of accurate thermometers were both observed infractions.

Health officials said standards were being followed during their first visit in early-July, but then things began to slide as the season progressed.

The Citizen also reported that in the last three seasons there have been 34 critical hazards and 94 sanitation violations.
