Ithaca Tompkins International Airport struggling: County steps in to help with funding

Regional airports are struggling across the U.S.

One local airport is among those that has only recently seen its pre-pandemic commercial service be restored.

The Ithaca Tompkins International Airport has received millions in funding for a terminal renovation, as well as a lot of focus from state officials to see expansion through.

That airport has historically been seen as an underrated landing spot for those visiting the Finger Lakes, or Central New York.

The Ithaca Voice reports that the Tompkins County Legislature is stepping in to help the struggling airport on the funding side. Around $2.7 million more over the next three years will be spent to keep the airport afloat.

While some are hopeful that the funding will be a solution – others are concerned about the long-term health of the airport. Things like fuel costs, airline ticket prices, and general health of the economy could easily derail gains made through this latest effort.
