It was a typical campaign event for Congressman Lee Zeldin, a candidate for New York State Governor on Thursday. That is until he was attacked by a member of the audience while speaking at the VFW in Perinton.

The attacker made his way up to the stage, which was caught on camera. As the man grabbed Zeldin, he could be heard saying “Okay, you’re done.”

The attacker was identified as 43-year-old David Jackbonis. He was charged with attempted assault.

Zeldin’s team issued the following statement after the attack:

“Congressman Zeldin, Alison Esposito and all members of Team Zeldin are safe following tonight’s attack. Far more must be done to make New York safe again. This is very much getting out of hand in this state. Unfortunately, Congressman Zeldin is just the latest New Yorker whose life has been affected by the out of control crime and violence in New York. This needs to stop! Thankfully, we still have exceptional men and women in law enforcement answering the call to protect our streets.”

Zeldin himself tweeted after the incident, crediting those on-scene, including his running-mate, those in attendance, and law enforcement for their quick action.
