Social Security: Which ten sates get the highest payment?

The Social Security Administration(SSA) has multiple programs that can provide Americans with monthly payments. One of the most well-known programs is their retirement fund. There are also programs offered by the SSA for people who are disabled. The amount that a beneficiary can claim is based a a several factors such as how much they have contributed to the fund and when you begin to claim. The ten most populous states are the ones that receive the most in Social Security benefits overall. Here are the top ten states for Social Security payments based on 2021 data from the SSA:

California

California is the most populated state in the US with over 39 million residents as of 2022. There are 6,166,205 people receiving Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance (OASDI). The SSA sent more than $9.3 billion in monthly checks to the beneficiaries, averaging about $1,515 per recipient.

Another 1,146,493 people receive Supplemental Security Income and 462,217 receive OASDI at the same time. On average, the federal government pays about $674 per recipient for a total of over $773 million.

Florida

As of 2022, Florida has nearly 22 million residents. There are 4,909,642 people receiving OASDI. The SSA sent out almost $7.6 billion in monthly checks to these individuals for an average of about $1,543 per recipient. An additional 559,875 receive Supplemental Security Income, 182,203 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government pays an average of $509 per recipient for a total of nearly $331 million.

Texas

Texas has about 30 million residents. Texas has 4,475,805 people receiving OASDI. The SSA sends about $6.7 billion in monthly checks– with the average benefit being $1,489 per recipient.

607,873 Texas residents receive Supplemental Security Income, 206,107 receive OASDI at the same time. he federal government pays an average of $572 per recipient for a total of over $348 million.

New York

With 19 million residents, there are 3,680,521 people receiving OASDI in New York. The SSA sends more than$5.8 billion in monthly checks– about $1,577 per recipient. An additional 583,442 receive Supplemental Security Income, 188,917 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government pays an an average of $597 per person, totaling over $348 million.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has almost 13 million residents and 2,878,165 of those people receiving OASDI. The SSA sends nearly $4.6 billion in monthly checks at about $1,588 per recipient. An additional 335,583 people receive government pays an average of $602 per person, totaling over $208 million.

Ohio

Ohio is approaching 12 million residents and 2,409,265 residents receiving OASDI. The SSA sent nearly $3.6 billion in monthly checks to these individuals– averaging $1,493 per recipient. 297,360 residents receive Supplemental Security Income, 86,350 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government pays an average of $619 per recipient for a total of over $184 million.

Illinois

Out of the some 12.5 million residents in Illinois, 2,271,926 people receiving OASDI. The SSA sends around $3.6 billion in monthly checks. The average benefit is $1,569 per recipient. 251,667 receive Supplemental Security Income, while 72,046 receive OASDI at the same time. On average, federal government pays $616 per recipient for a total of almost $155 million.

Michigan

Michigan is approaching 10 million residents and 2,253,295 people receiving OASDI. Nearly $3.6 billion in was sent as monthly checks– about $1,602 per recipient. An additional 256,662 receive Supplemental Security Income, 79,375 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government contributes $622 per recipient for a total of nearly $160 million.

North Carolina

Out of the nearly 11 million residents in North Carolina, there are 2,202,898 people receiving OASDI. The SSA sent almost $3.4 billion in monthly checks of about $1,538 per person. Another 221,382 receive Supplemental Security Income, and 74,839 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government pays about $588 per recipient, for a total over $130 million.

Georgia

With nearly 11 million residents, nearly 1,918,848 people in Georgia receive OASDI. About $2.9 billion in monthly checks was sent out by the SSA, worth about $1,495 per recipient. An additional 252,364 receive Supplemental Security Income, and 81,977 receive OASDI at the same time. The federal government pays and average of $602 per recipient for a total of nearly $152 million.
