Chris Bassitt throws gem as Mets shut out Brewers

The New York Mets blanked the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-0, in the series opener on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Chris Bassitt started on the mound for New York and tossed eight shutout innings while striking out seven. Drew Smith recorded the final three outs of the game.

The Mets plated three of their four runs in the first inning. Pete Alonso opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Jeff McNeil followed that with an RBI double. Eduardo Escobar capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Alonso picked up his second RBI of the game in the fifth with an RBI single.

Brandon Nimmo also collected two hits, while Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, and Luis Guillorme had hits as well.

Adrian Houser surrendered all four runs for Milwaukee.

The three-game series will continue on Wednesday night. Left-hander David Peterson is scheduled to start on the hill for New York.
