Climate justice activists march on New York State Capitol demanding “15 billion before it’s too late”

On March 8th at 12:30 pm, over 400 people from across New York will rally at the New York State Capitol to pressure legislators to include $15 billion in climate justice funding in their one-house budgets, which are set for release the following week. This action is the culminating event in a larger budget campaign that includes over 70 grassroots lobby visits and distributed community actions.

The March 8th day of action will begin at 11:30 am in East Capitol Park before a march to the New York State Executive Mansion, home to Governor Kathy Hochul. At 12:30 pm, the 400+ environmental justice advocates will hold a rally outside of the Capitol building on State Street, which will include speeches from legislators and community leaders.

NY Renews, a coalition of over 320 community-based, labor, environmental justice, faith, and climate groups, is demanding a $15 billion investment in climate justice during the 2022–2023 fiscal year, a figure adopted from an NYSERDA estimate that calls for a minimum investment of $10 billion annually, with increases every year, to reduce climate risk for communities in New York State.

The 400 people from NY Renews coalition, with members across NY State will march on New York State Capitol demanding “15 billion before it’s too late” on March 8, 2022 at 12:30 p.m. It will take place at the New York State Capitol’s State Street entrance. The event will be outdoors; attendees will be masked and maintain social distance. Please contact Marie Scarles, [email protected], (860) 514-5716 with any questions.
