Stimulus checks aren’t universal basic income, but it gave many people an idea of what that might be like.
This has made many Americans call on Congress to ask for a fourth stimulus check.
While that remains highly unlikely, many cities and states are creating UBI programs that would give residents recurring payments over a certain period of time.

Here are 8 cities and states that plan to give some residents a UBI
Alaska has been giving its residents an annual check for years.
It’s part of the Alaska Permanent Fund, and gives residents a portion of the state oil revenues.
To be eligible you need to be a resident in Alaska for one year. If you’ve been in jail or have felonies you do not qualify.
643,000 residents were paid checks worth $1,114 this year.
Pittsburgh plans to give 200 low income households $500 per month for two years.

Columbia, South Carolina has chosen 100 low income fathers to give a debit card worth $500 to.
They’ll see $500 added to the card each month for 11 more months.
Chicago is starting a UBI program and choosing 5,000 low income families at random to give $500 monthly payments to.
The household must make under $35,000 per year.

Los Angeles is also implementing a UBI plan and paying 3,200 low income families $1,000 per month for one year.
New Orleans is giving teens and young adults $350 per month to help teach financial literacy.
To get the payments you must be between 16 and 24 while out of school or unemployed.
The payments will last for ten months.

Durham, North Carolina is paying formerly incarcerated residents $500 per month for one year under the Excel pilot program.
Most funding was donated by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
To be eligible you need to be 18 or older, incarcerated within the last 5 years, and not make over 60% of the median income for the area.
California has a stimulus package that is not recurring, but has had two rounds now with the potential for a third round in 2022.
9 million residents have or will receive checks worth $600-$1,100 by Jan. 11, 2022.
