A freshmen from William Smith College has died following a serious car accident Friday afternoon in the area of State Route 96 and Brewer Road in Waterloo.
It resulted in the area of those two roads being shut down for a period of time during the rush hour.
A medical helicopter was requested to the scene, with a landing zone being established in Junius.
The New York State Police Reconstruction Team investigated the accident and found that the driver, Daryannos Marco Kinney, 18, of Bethlehem, PA., was driving northbound on Brewer Road and failed to stop at the stop sign. He then struck a dump truck driven by Marc Lesterhuis, 53, of Waterloo, who was not injured.
The front seat passenger, Mekhi Bennett, 19, of Bronx, NY was airlifted to Upstate Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The back seat passenger, Veronica Ashby, age 18, from New York City was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ashby was a resident of New York City and attended Success Academy High School of the Liberal Arts. She was a freshman at William Smith College in Geneva.
A third car was stopped on Brewer Road and struck by the vehicle driven by Kinney. The driver, Makayla Price, of Waterloo, was not injured.
Firefighters from Waterloo and Border City were called to the scene. Emergency medical staff were called from North Seneca, South Seneca, and Finger Lakes ambulance companies.
