Elmira residents and police chief speak out against increasing violence in the city

Community members are starting to voice their opinions about violence in the City of Elmira following a double shootout Friday that left one dead and an officer injured.

The deceased man, David Wandell, 53, was a prole absconder and pulled a gun on an officer before running off.

He was spotted in Woodlawn Cemetery where he pulled a gun on officers again and was shot and killed.

One resident in the Woodlawn area said after 30 years of residing there the violence has only increased.

EPD Chief Alvernaz said with the increase in violence he fears for people in the city but he takes his responsibility to keep everyone safe very seriously.
