Hornell Fire Department continues to grow thanks to change in residency requirements

Hornell continues to appoint full time firefighters for the Hornell Fire Department with recent changes made to the residency requirements for full time municipal employees.

Mark Joy of Arkport was appointed this week after volunteering for the last ten years at Arkport Fire Department.

Previously Hornell has hired volunteer firefighters from North Hornell and South Hornell Fire Departments.

The change was made in 2019 which allowed for people living within 15 miles of the Hornell City border to work full time at the fire department.

Hornell Fire Chief Frank Brzozowski said without the change they likely would not have reached their last few hires.

Joy brings both firefighting experience and EMT, making him valuable to the profession.
