In legislation backed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, direct care workers and family caregivers may receive $1 billion in federal aid.
Direct care agencies have been calling on officials to help increase the workforce after many employees left and retaining new ones has proven difficult, leaving a strain on the industry.
The support goes to the Supporting Our Direct Care Workforce and Family Caregivers Act. The act works to support workers in these work forces as well as the patients that depend on them to survive.
The legislation would provide states with grants for training and workforce promotion.
