Teacher for Sodus School District presented with reward for furthering education

Ella Hotchkiss, an ENL teacher in the Sodus School District, was presented with the Barrie Fleegel Memorial Active Educator Grant.

Joyce Pittenger, president of the Wayne County Retired Teachers’ Association, presented the award.

The grant was created to honor Barrie Fleegel, a Marion School District teacher who was not only active as a teacher and administrator, but after retiring became active in the county, zone and state teacher’s retirement system. The award is given to teacher’s choosing to further their education and have the same beliefs as Freegel, who believed, “to accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.”

Hotchkiss followed in her father’s footsteps becoming a teacher. After enjoying Spanish and English in college she became interested in the ESL program. After teaching for two years in Livingston County she went to Sodus School District with her belief in supporting literacy. She is currently working toward her Master’s Degree at Houghton College in the field of literacy.
