First responders with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office say things could have turned out significantly worse for several kayakers who had to be rescued from Canandaigua Lake during gusty, wavy conditions over the weekend.
On Tuesday, deputies provided an update on a rescue that took place around 4 p.m. on Saturday at a portion of Canandaigua Lake that is approximately 150 feet deep.
According to deputies, two civilian boaters- along with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol pulled three overturned kayakers after a 911 call.
A two person kayak was overturned by a wave and when another kayaker attempted to assist- his kayak overturned. Deputies said water temperature was approximately 59 degrees, and the winds were gusting at approximately 35 mph.
The Cheshire Fire Department, Canandaigua Ambulance, citizen boaters, and Marine Patrol all assisted and convened on the scene within four minutes of the 911 call.
Deputies say that personal floatation devices are required and could save your life in the event of an emergency.
