This week it became nearly-certain that New York would lose a Congressional seat, due to loss of population.
In light of that news from the U.S. Census Bureau count in 2020- Gov. Andrew Cuomo has asked the Attorney General’s office to evaluate legal options. Onlookers and experts say that a legal challenge to a census outcome would take years, and not actually stop the process of redistricting- which will be necessary.
However, New York was only 89 census responses away from keeping that seat.
“Look you had a lot going on, you had people who were nervous to come forward, you have undocumented people who were nervous to come forward,” Cuomo said this week. “I do believe the federal government had a chilling effect.”
He also questioned whether the count was accurately performed.
