The Ithaca Police Department reports that they were assisted by multiple agencies after a homicide during the evening hours on Wednesday.
It happened in the 500 block of West State Street in the city of Ithaca around 10:30 p.m.
Officers responded to a call for shots fired in that area of West Green Street, and a victim was located with an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim was identified as 45-year-old John Ray Lawton, of Ithaca.
Police say next of kin was notified and that a homicide investigation is underway.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Cornell University Police Department, and New York State Police BCI all assisted.
