New York State Police say they are investigating a hit-and-run fatal crash that occurred Friday morning between exits 46 and 47.
New York State Police Public Information Officer Mark O’Donnell said this happened at 4:20 a.m. near the Ontario rest stop, between exits 46 in Henrietta and 47 in Leroy.
A tractor-trailer was headed west in the far right lane, then crossed over multiple lanes to make a U-turn for an unknown reason.
Another vehicle traveling west behind the truck slammed into the back – sheering off the roof of the vehicle.
The man driving the car was killed in the collision; the woman who was riding int he passenger seat of the car was seriously injured, but later died.
The identities of those involved has not been released yet.
A piece of debris from the sheered off vehicle was found along Jefferson Road a while later. Deputies believe the tractor-trailer driver, who left the scene, stopped at the Double Tree Hotel.
The rig is described as a yellow Volvo truck with a sleeper cab pulling a trailer. The driver’s side will likely have severe damage to it.
