Auburn makes second bid for $2M state grant to rehab former Chemung building downtown

Auburn is making another bid for a $2 million state grant to revitalize a key downtown building, following an unsuccessful application last year.

The Auburn City Council has scheduled a public hearing for May 9 to discuss the Restore NY Communities Initiative grant application for the redevelopment of 120 Genesee Street, a structure previously occupied by Chemung Canal Trust Co.

City officials have expressed optimism about securing the grant this time around. The proposal, which comes in around $6.6 million, aligns with Auburn’s strategic initiatives to enhance downtown vitality. The city council is set to vote on a resolution to formally apply for the funding after the public hearing, aiming to submit the application by May 22.

We’ll have more on this in our monthly conversation with Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giennettino later this week.
