Just like the end of the 2019-2020 local high school sports season, the upcoming one will look a lot different than usual as well. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has delayed the official start date of the fall 2020 high school sports season until September 21 and cancelled all fall 2020 regional and state championship games.
In addition to those decisions recommended by the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 Task Force in a meeting this morning, the organization also announced a condensed season schedule for 2020-2021 fall, winter and spring sports beginning January 2021 if COVID-19 prevents high school sports from happening in the state for the entire rest of the year. If that scenario arises, winter sports will be played from January 4 to March 13. Fall sports will be played March 1 to May 8. Spring sports will be played April 5 to June 12.

The other aspects of this decision today by the NYSPHSAA officers are waiving the seven-day practice rule, encouraging geographic scheduling for games and giving individuals schools the option to offer offseason conditioning workouts if permitted by state officials.
