Republican leaders from the Finger Lakes region celebrated the reopening of the economy at a press conference on Tuesday.
They stressed that now is the time for communities and governments to continue to work together to keep businesses open.
“That should be celebrated,” Rep. Tom Reed said Tuesday. “We are glad that the governor listened to the voice of western New York in regards to the Finger Lakes region, as well as the Southern Tier region, and recognized that a one-size-fits-all state approach to this was not appropriate.”
He says that staying open is of paramount importance.
“We must stay open because the crisis associated with the virus obviously has been devastating to the families that have been impacted, but the economic crisis and the economic devastation has been phenomenally bad,” he said.
“Wegmans, Tops, Aldi, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, and Target have all been operating and taking precautions,” said Sen. Rich Funke, R-55. “There’s no reason why other retailers can’t do the same thing and do it right now.”
