Bill would strengthen wage theft, equal pay laws in New York

New York State wants to make it easier for employees who are taken advantage of by their employers to get owed pay back.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would strengthen New York’s wage theft and equal pay laws.

The “Empowering People in Rights Enforcement Worker Protection Act,” or EMPIRE Act, would allow workers to file claims against their employer for any labor law violation. This would also include lost wages.

Advocates say that even though improved laws have been passed in recent years – many employees who are owed wages, never actually see them.

The measure is in committee at this time.
