Girl Scout cookies get branding overhaul, as season kicks off

This week Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways and Girl Scouts of the USA launched the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie Program. For the 103rd year, Girl Scouts across the United States become entrepreneurs as they earn money to power their own leadership opportunities and adventures.

This season, Girl Scouts announces two sweet new ways to celebrate young female leaders: a new lemon cookie available in select areas (including GSNYPENN territory’s spanning 24 counties in New York and two in Northern Pennsylvania) and refreshed packaging reflecting the amazing experiences cookie earnings make possible for girls. GSNYPENN’s cookie season runs January 7th through March 29th.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program® teaches girls about entrepreneurship as they have fun learning essential skills like money management, public speaking, and decision making, which set them up for a lifetime of success. Nine out of 10 Girl Scouts say the cookie program has built their entrepreneurship skills and interest in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career path. Every cookie purchase is an investment in world-changing business leaders of tomorrow. What’s more, each and every purchase stays local to power amazing experiences and leadership opportunities for girls across the GSNYPENN council area.

The new Girl Scout Cookie is Lemon-Ups, a crispy lemon cookie baked with messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. “I am a go-getter” and “I am an innovator” are among eight phrases that bring the experience of Girl Scouting to life. Lemon-Ups are available for purchase from GSNYPENN Girl Scouts. Cookies in the GSNYPENN region are priced at $5 per box. The new cookie joins the 2020 national lineup. Varieties available locally (in addition to Lemon-Ups) include Trefoils®, Do-si-dos®, Tagalongs®, gluten-free Toffee-Tastic™, Thin Mints®, Samoas® and Girl Scout S’mores.

The refreshed cookie packaging continues to emphasize what the cookie program is all about. Updated images feature current Girl Scouts taking part in a diverse range of experiences available to members—from adventure-packed camping and canoeing, to exploring space science and designing robots, to taking action to improve their communities. Every purchase of Girl Scout Cookies makes experiences like these possible for girls across the local area.

“We can’t wait to see all the incredible experiences and adventures cookies will help fuel for GSNYPENN Girl Scouts this season. When you purchase cookies, you’re helping girls power their Girl Scout experience and supporting female entrepreneurs. We truly appreciate the community’s support of our girls,” says GSNYPENN CEO Julie Dale.

Customers can choose to purchase cookies through GSNYPENN’s biannual Sweet Support council service project and help a local community partner. Sweet Support happens during both the fall product and cookie programs. For various reasons, some customers do not wish to purchase items for themselves. Through Sweet Support, they purchase as a donation and give to others while supporting local Girl Scouts. This season, GSNYPENN is partnering with Meals on Wheels. To gift cookies, simply place an order with a Girl Scout in January-February or visit a booth later in the season. Customers can also support the program through a girl’s Digital Cookie online sales with no shipping costs incurred. Last season, Sweet Support recipient Rescue Mission Alliance was gifted 15,324 boxes of cookies.

This season, GSNYPENN is again running a special sweepstakes called Gimme5 to incentivize customers to purchase five or more boxes at one time. The sweepstakes only applies to cookies purchased from GSNYPENN Girl Scouts. Prizes include cookies and a trip to Italy! Learn more at gimme5sweeps.com.

Girl Scout Cookies can only be purchased from a registered Girl Scout. Don’t have a Girl Scout in your life? Contact GSNYPENN Customer Care at 1.855.213.8555 or email [email protected] to get in touch with local troops selling cookies. You can find upcoming booth sales by visiting girlscoutcookies.org and entering your zip code or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android. GSNYPENN booths run February 29-March 29.

Girl Scouts serves girls in grade K-12. Annual membership is $25. Financial assistance is available. To register a girl online, visit gsnypenn.org/join. To become an adult volunteer, learn more at gsnypenn.org/volunteer.
