Starting January 6th employers will not be able to ask about salary history.
New legislation takes hold on that day, which was an effort to close the gender wage gap in New York.
The new law applies to public and private employers. It even prevents employers from getting that information through other means. That includes asking past employers, or using other coordinated efforts to find out what an individual made at a past job.
The ban is part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2019 Women’s Justice Agenda and “builds on the progress New York has made to improve reproductive, economic and social justice for all New York women,” a Department of Labor press release said.
