The Wayne County Department of Motor Vehicles say documents containing personal information of hundreds of citizens were thrown away by mistake.
The clerk’s office says cleaning staff threw out a box of sales tax applications last week. The documents were supposed to be heading to Albany had personal information on them.
“These forms were in a locked and secure area of the Department of Motor Vehicles and someone mistakenly thought they were trash and sent them to the landfill,” County Clerk Michael Jankowski said in a statement.
The clerk says 239 people are impacted by this, and that each will be notified by mail.
The matter was referred to the State Department of Motor Vehicles for an investigation.
