Two drown in Seneca County fishing accident in Tyre

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Friday around 9 p.m. emergency crews responded to the report of a missing Cayuga County pair following a fishing trip near South Mays Point in Tyre.

Deputies responded to the scene at an area off of South Mays Point Road in the Town of Tyre. They found a vehicle with personal items and fishing equipment.

A search ensued, and personal items were found near the water as well.

Sheriff Luce says that K9 units and State Police assisted with the search. That search was suspended at 11 p.m.

On Saturday the Sheriff’s dive team returned to the scene and recovered the bodies of 5-year-old Christoph Jones, of Auburn; and 81-year-old Essie Hall, of Cayuga.

Luce says that Hall was a close family friend who enjoyed spending time with Christoph and taking him fishing.

Investigators believe that the pair slipped off the bank into the water. No foul play is suspected, but the case remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted by state police, Auburn PD, and the Canal Corporation.
